Nanjing
City (pop., 1993 est.: 2,490,000), capital of Jiangsu province, E central China. Located on the S bank of the Chang (Yangtze) River, northwest of Shanghai, the site has been inhabited for thousands of years. The present city was founded in 1368 by the Ming dynasty, which had its capital there 1368-1421. It was taken by the British in the Opium Wars of 1842 and was largely destroyed by Taiping rebels in 1853-64. It was opened as a treaty port in 1899 and was the Kuomintang capital 1928-37, then was taken by the Japanese. It was the site of the Nanjing Massacre, in the Sino-Japanese War. Occupied by Communist forces in 1949, it became the provincial capital in 1952. It is a port city and a major industrial and communications center with a university and several colleges. Nearby monuments include mausoleums of Sun Yat-sen and a Ming emperor.


Nanning
City (pop., 1991 est.: 1,070,000), capital of Guangxi province, SE China. Located on the N bank of the Yung River, it was the site of a county seat first established in AD 318. A frontier prefecture under the Song dynasty, it was later ruled successively by the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was opened to foreign trade in 1907. It was occupied by the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese War, although it was briefly a U.S. air base. It was a supply base for Communist forces during the anti-French war in Indochina and the Vietnam War. Formerly an essentially commercial and administrative center, it has experienced industrial growth.
