Munro
Canadian writer. Born in Wingham, Ont., she is known for exquisitely drawn short stories, usually set in rural Ontario and peopled by characters of Scotch-Irish stock. Her collections Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), Who Do You Think You Are? (1978), and The Progress of Love (1986) won the Governor General's Literary Award. Her other collections include Something I've Been Meaning to Tell You (1974), The Moons of Jupiter (1982), Friend of My Youth (1986), Open Secrets (1994), and The Love of a Good Woman (1998).
escrow
Instrument, such as a deed, money, or property, that constitutes evidence of obligations between two or more parties and is held by a third party. It is delivered by the third party only upon fulfillment of some condition. In commercial usage, this condition is most often the performance of an act (e.g., payment) by the party who is to receive the instrument. Escrow is also used in family transactions (e.g., when a death in the family results in an instrument being delivered to another family member).
euro
Unit of exchange adopted in January 1999 that represents the combined currencies of 11 nations of the European Union, incl. the German deutsche mark, the French franc, and the Italian lira. The new currency is intended to strengthen Europe as an economic power, increase international trade, simplify monetary transactions, and lead to pricing equality throughout Europe. The European Union intends that the euro become the single currency of a unified Western European economy starting in January 2002; the currencies of all 11 countries will remain in use alongside the euro until then. A few members, notably Britain, have announced that they will wait for it to go into effect before deciding whether to join.
Macao
Former Portuguese territory (pop., 1996 est.: 433,000), S coast of China. It consists of a small peninsula projecting from Guangdong province and two small islands, about 40 mi (64 km) west of Hong Kong. It occupies a total land area of 6.5 sq mi (17 sq km); Macao city (pop., 1995 est.: 424,000) is the administrative center. Portuguese traders first arrived in 1513, and it soon became the chief market center for the trade between China and Japan. It was declared a Portuguese colony in 1849 and an overseas territory in 1951. In Dec. 1999 Portugal returned it to Chinese rule. Tourism and gambling are the mainstay of its economy.
Maurois
French writer. An officer in the British army during World War I, Maurois had his first literary success with The Silences of Colonel Bramble (1918), a humorous commentary on warfare and the British character. His novels include Bernard Quesnay (1926) and Whatever Gods May Be (1928). He is best known for biographies with the narrative interest of novels, incl. those of P. B. Shelley, Lord Byron, V.
