Bird of the migratory gallinule species (Gallinula chloropus, family Rallidae) of Europe, Africa, and E N. America. Moorhens are blackish and have a scarlet frontal shield (fleshy plate on the forehead). In N. America, the moorhen is sometimes called the Florida gallinule.
