polka
Lively couple dance of Bohemian folk origin (polka is Czech for "Polish woman") in duple time, characterized by three quick steps and a hop. Originating in the early 19th cent., it became popular in ballrooms across Europe and in N. and S. America. It has remained popular in the 20th cent. as both a folk dance and a ballroom dance.


collard
Headless form of cabbage (Brassica oleracea 'acephala'), in the mustard family. It bears the same botanical name as kale, differing only in that collard leaves are much broader, are not frilled, and resemble the rosette leaves of head cabbage. The main stem has a rosette of leaves at the top. Lower leaves commonly are harvested progressively; sometimes the entire young rosette is harvested. The leaves are highly nutritious, rich in minerals and in vitamins A and C.


goliard
Any of the wandering students and clerics in medieval England, France, and Germany remembered for their satirical verses and poems in praise of debauchery and against the church and pope. Renegades of no fixed abode, chiefly interested in riotous living, they described themselves as followers of the legendary Bishop Golias. By a series of decrees (from 1227), the church eventually revoked their clerical privileges. Carmina Burana is a collection of 13th-cent. Latin goliard poems and songs; some were translated by J. A. Symonds as Wine, Women, and Song (1884), and some were set in a famous cantata by C. Orff (1937). In the 14th cent. the term came to mean jongleur, or minstrel.


Holland
Historic region, the Netherlands, occupying the NW portion of the modern country. It originated in the early 12th cent. as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1299 it was united with Hainaut. Members of the house of Wittelsbach served as counts of Holland, Zeeland, and Hainaut until 1433, when they ceded the titles to Philip III the Good, duke of Burgundy. It passed to the Habsburgs in 1482, and became a center of the revolt against Spain in 1572. Holland and six other N Netherlands provinces declared their independence from Spain in 1579, proclaiming the United Provinces of the Netherlands. Its capital, Amsterdam, became Europe's foremost commercial center in the 18th cent. The Napoleonic kingdom of Holland occupied the territory 1806-10. In 1840 it was divided into the provinces of N. Holland and S. Holland.


loka
In Hinduism, the universe or any particular division of it. The most common division of the universe is the tri-loka, or three worlds (heaven, earth, and atmosphere, or heaven, world, and netherworld), each of which is divided into seven regions. Sometimes, instead of the tri-loka, 14 worlds are envisioned, seven above the earth and seven below. Whatever the division, it illustrates the basic Hindu concept of hierarchically ordered worlds.
