albedo
Fraction of light reflected by a body or surface, commonly used in astronomy to describe the reflective properties of planets, natural satellites, and asteroids. "Normal" albedo (the relative brightness of a surface when illuminated and observed from directly above) is often used to determine the surface compositions of satellites and asteroids. The albedo, diameter, and distance of such objects together determine their brightness.


bed
Piece of furniture on which a person may recline or sleep. Beds of simple construction appear in medieval manuscripts, as well as more decorative beds with carving and inlay, embroidered coverlets, and elaborate hangings. The canopy, or tester, was introduced in the 15th cent. In the 1820s, the development of coiled springs fitted into mattresses revolutionized the bed. In the Middle East, beds consisted of rugs piled up on the floor. In China, raised and canopied beds were used 2,000 years ago. The traditional Japanese bed (futon) consist of quilted padding and a coverlet arranged on the floor.


comedy
Genre of dramatic literature that deals with the light and amusing, or with the serious and profound in a light, familiar, or satirical manner. Comedy can be traced to revels associated with worship in Greece in the 5th cent. BC. Aristophanes, Menander, Terence, and Plautus produced comedies in classical literature. It reappeared in the late Middle Ages, when the term was used to mean simply a story with a happy ending (e.g., Dante's Divine Comedy), the same meaning it has in novels of the last three centuries (e.g., the fiction of J. Kobe
City (pop., 1995: 1,424,000), S central Honshu, Japan. It is situated on Osaka Bay and occupies a narrow shelf of land between mountains and the sea. With neighboring cities Osaka and Kyoto, it is the center of an industrial zone. Until the Meiji Restoration it was only a fishing village, but it grew rapidly in the late 19th cent. It was severely bombed during World War II and was entirely rebuilt after 1945. It suffered a major earthquake in 1995. Kobe is an important Japanese port and a center of shipbuilding and steel production; it is the seat of Kobe Univ.


mobile
Abstract sculpture that has moving parts, driven either by motors or by the natural force of air currents. Its revolving parts create a new visual experience of constantly changing volumes and forms. The term was initially suggested by M. Duchamp for a 1932 Paris exhibition of such works by A. Calder, who became the mobile's greatest exponent.
