aegis
In ancient Greece, the leather cloak or breastplate associated with Zeus. It was worn most prominently by Zeus's daughter Athena (whose aegis bore the head of Medusa) but occasionally also by other gods (e.g., Apollo in the Iliad).


leg
Lower limb of a biped, jointed at the knee, supporting the body and used for walking and running. Its bones are the femur (thighbone), longest bone in the human body; patella (kneecap); tibia (shin); and fibula. The biceps muscle of the thigh bends the leg; the quadriceps straightens it.


Magi
In Christian tradition, wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus. According to Matthew 2:1-12, they followed a miraculous guiding star to Bethlehem and brought gifts of "gold and frankincense and myrrh." Herod asked them to report the location of Jesus' birth on their return journey, but an angel warned them of his evil intentions. In later Christian tradition they were said to be kings and were given the names Melchior, Balthasar, and Gaspar. Their visit was seen as evidence that the Gentiles as well as the Jews would worship Jesus, and it is celebrated in the feast of Ephiphany. See also magus.


mead
Alcoholic beverage fermented from honey and water. It can be light or rich, sweet or dry, or even sparkling. Alcoholic drinks made from honey were common in ancient Scandinavia, Gaul, Teutonic Europe, and Greece; they were particularly common in N Europe, where grapevines do not flourish. By the 14th cent., ale and sweetened wine were surpassing mead in popularity. Today mead is made as a sweet or dry wine of low alcoholic strength. Spiced mead is called metheglin.


meat
Flesh and other edible parts of animals, particularly mammals, used for food. Not only the muscles and fat but also such organs as the liver, kidney, and heart are consumed as meat. Meat is valued as a complete-protein food, containing all the amino acids necessary for the human body. It digests slowly, largely because of the presence of fats. Beef is the most widely consumed meat; pork is second; mutton and lamb, goat, venison, and rabbit are other common meats. The U.S. produces and consumes about a third of the world's meat, while much of the world's population eats little if any meat, though it is generally prized.


Meir
U.S.-Israeli (Ukrainian-born) stateswoman, fourth prime minister of Israel (1969-74). Her family emigrated to Milwaukee in 1906, where she became a leader of the Milwaukee Labor Zionist Party. In 1921 she and her husband emigrated to Palestine, where she emerged as a forceful negotiator with British authorities during World War II. A signer of Israel's independence declaration in 1948, she served in the Knesset (1949-74) and held the posts of minister of labor (1949-56) and foreign minister (1956-66).
