marmot
Any of about 14 species (genus Marmota) of stout-bodied, diurnal, terrestrial squirrels found in N. America, Europe, and Asia. Marmots are 12-24 in. (30-60 cm) long, excluding the short tail, and weigh 7-17 lbs (3-7.5 kg). Most species live in burrows or among boulders. They frequently sit upright and emit a whistling alarm call. Marmots live almost entirely on green plants, storing fat for hibernation. The black-and-white hoary marmot (M. caligata), of Siberia and NW N. America, which hibernates for up to nine months, is hunted for food and fur. The yellow-bellied marmot (M. flaviventris) inhabits the W U.S. and British Columbia. See also woodchuck.


Marot
French poet. While imprisoned in 1526 for defying Lenten abstinence regulations, he wrote some of his best-known works, incl. "L'Enfer" ("The Inferno"), an allegorical satire on justice. He held several court posts; his long service to Francis I was only briefly interrupted. One of the greatest poets of the French Renaissance, he markedly influenced the style of his successors with his use of the forms and imagery of Latin poetry. When not writing official court poems, he spent most of his time translating the Psalms.


Marriott
U.S. businessman who founded one of the largest U.S. hotel and restaurant organizations. Born in Marriott, Utah, the son of a Mormon rancher, he opened a root-beer and barbecue stand in Washington, D.C., in 1927. By the end of World War II his chain of Hot Shoppe family restaurants extended over the entire E. Coast, and in 1957 he opened his first hotel. His son J. Willard Marriott, Jr., succeeded him as president of the Marriott Corp. in 1964. At the time of the elder Marriott's death, the Marriott Corp. had 140,000 employees in 26 countries and total annual sales of $3.5 billion. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988.
