Makalu
Peak in the Himalayas, on the Nepalese-Tibetan border. Located east-southeast of Mt. Everest, it reaches 27,766 ft (8,463 m), making it one of the world's highest mountains. Attempts to ascend its steep, glacier-covered sides did not begin until 1954. On May 15, 1955, two French climbers--Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray--reached the summit, and seven more members of their party arrived within two days.
Manala
In Finnish mythology, the realm of the dead. Manala is ruled by the goddess Louhi, a fierce haglike creature. It is reached by crossing a fiery stream, the river of death, either over a narrow bridge or on a boat brought by a denizen of the other world. Though dark and gloomy, it is not a place of everlasting torment like the Christian hell.
Mara
Buddhist Lord of the Senses, who repeatedly tempted the Buddha Gautama. When Gautama seated himself under the bodhi tree to await enlightenment, the evil Mara appeared in the guise of a messenger claiming that a rival had usurped the family throne. After sending a storm of rain, rocks, ashes, and darkness to frighten away the gods who had gathered, he challenged Gautama's right to sit beneath the tree and sent forth his three daughters, Trsna, Rati, and Raga (thirst, desire, and delight), to seduce Gautama, but to no avail. After the Buddha had achieved enlightenment, Mara pressed him to abandon any attempt to preach, but the gods successfully persuaded him to preach the law.

Island in the Amazon River delta, Brazil. The world's largest fluvial island, it is 183 mi (295 km) long and 124 mi (200 km) wide, with an area of 15,500 sq mi (40,100 sq km). The main flow of the Amazon passes north of Marajó , but numerous narrow channels direct part of its water into the Pará River, an estuary that separates the island from the mainland to the south. Archaeological remains in the E savanna are similar to those of pre-Columbian Andean cultures.
Marat
French politician and a leader of the radical Montagnard faction in the French Revolution. He was a well-known doctor in London in the 1770s. Returning to France in 1777, he was appointed physician at the court of Louis XVI's brother, the comte d'Artois (later Charles X). Marat wrote scientific publications as well as political pamphlets. From 1789, as editor of the newspaper L'Ami du Peuple, he became an influential voice for radical measures against the aristocrats. He criticized moderate revolutionary leaders and warned against the é migré nobility, then advocated the execution of counterrevolutionaries. One of the most influential members of the National Convention (1792), he was actively supported by Parisians in street demonstrations. In April 1793 the Girondins brought him before a Revolutionary tribunal, but he was acquitted. In July a young Girondin supporter, C.
