Any of the chiefly Australian trees that make up the genus Casuarina (family Casuarinaceae), which have whorls of scalelike leaves and jointed stems resembling horsetails. Several species, especially C. equisetifolia, are valued for their hard, dense, yellowish- to reddish-brown wood, which is strong and reputed to be resistant to termite attack. Beefwood and ironwood are common names that reflect the wood's color and hardness.

Largest New World cat. Once found in wooded regions from the U.S.-Mexican border south to Patagonia, the jaguar (Panthera, or Leo, onca) survives, in reduced numbers, only in remote areas of S. America; the largest known population is in the Amazon rain forest. The male is 5.5-9 ft (1.7-2.7 m), incl. the 23-35-in. (60-90-cm) tail, and weighs 220-350 lbs (100-160 kg). Lake, Great Rift Valley, S Kenya, east of Lake Victoria. Occupying an area of 240 sq mi (622 sq km), it is 20 mi (32 km) long and 2 mi (3 km) wide. Its bed consists almost entirely of soda deposits, which dye the waters a vivid pink.

Italian film actress. An illegitimate child brought up in poverty, she became a nightclub singer noted for her bawdy street songs. Magyars
People who form the dominant ethnic group in Hungary. Speakers of a Finno-Ugric language, they migrated from their early home in the region of present-day Bashkortostan in E European Russia across the S Russian and Ukrainian steppes into the N Balkans in the 9th cent. After collisions with neighboring peoples, the Magyars crossed the Carpathians and settled in the middle basin of the Danube River in the late 9th cent., subjugating Slavs and other peoples there. They adopted Christianity in the 11th cent.


Mandarin

The word comes from the Portuguese version of the Malay term for a minister of state.
