jackal
Any of three canine species of the genus Canis. They inhabit open country and live alone, in pairs, or in packs. They hunt at night, feeding on small animals, plant material, or carrion. A pack can bring down larger prey. The golden, or Asiatic, jackal (yellowish) is found from E Europe and NE Africa to SE Asia. The black-backed jackal (rusty red with a black back) and side-striped jackal (grayish with a white-tipped tail and an indistinct stripe on each side) are found in S and E Africa. Jackals are 34-37 in. (85-95 cm) long, incl. the 12-14-in. (30-35-cm) tail, and weigh 15-24 lbs (7-11 kg).
Macao
Former Portuguese territory (pop., 1996 est.: 433,000), S coast of China. It consists of a small peninsula projecting from Guangdong province and two small islands, about 40 mi (64 km) west of Hong Kong. It occupies a total land area of 6.5 sq mi (17 sq km); Macao city (pop., 1995 est.: 424,000) is the administrative center. Portuguese traders first arrived in 1513, and it soon became the chief market center for the trade between China and Japan. It was declared a Portuguese colony in 1849 and an overseas territory in 1951. In Dec. 1999 Portugal returned it to Chinese rule. Tourism and gambling are the mainstay of its economy.
macaw
Any of about 18 species of large tropical New World parrots (subfamily Psittacinae) with very long tails and big sickle-shaped beaks. Macaws eat fruits and nuts. They are easily tamed and often kept as pets; some learn to mimic human speech, but most only screech. A few have lived 65 years. Best known is the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), found from Mexico to Brazil, a 36-in. (90-cm) bright-red bird with blue and yellow wings, blue and red tail, and white face.
Machaut
French poet and composer. After possibly receiving a university education and taking holy orders, he traveled throughout Europe as secretary to the king of Bohemia. From 1340 he settled in Reims, supported by several royal patrons, incl. the duc de Berry, and King Charles V. Beside 14 narrative poems incorporating short lyrics, he wrote more than 400 separate lyric poems. His musical output numbers dozens each of the genres of formes fixes, as well as the first complete setting of the mass for four voices, and he was the outstanding figure of the Ars Nova. His poetry was a source for G. Chaucer.
mackerel
Swift-moving, carnivorous, torpedo-shaped food and sport fishes of temperate and tropical seas worldwide. Mackerels (family Scombridae, order Perciformes) are 1-5.5 ft (30-170 cm) long. The common mackerel (Scomber scombrus) of the N. Atlantic and the chub mackerel (S. colias) of California and the Atlantic are economically important, as are the Indian mackerels (genus Rastrelliger) and the frigate mackerels (genus Auxis).
