jacama
Leguminous vine (Pachyrhizus erosus, or P. tuberosus), also called yam bean. A native of Mexico and Central and S. America, it is grown for its edible root. The irregularly globular, brown-skinned tubers are white-fleshed, crisp, and juicy. There are two varieties, those with clear juice and those with milky juice. Both have a mild flavor and are eaten raw or cooked. Sometimes very young seedpods of the plant are eaten, but the mature seeds are highly toxic.
Macao
Former Portuguese territory (pop., 1996 est.: 433,000), S coast of China. It consists of a small peninsula projecting from Guangdong province and two small islands, about 40 mi (64 km) west of Hong Kong. It occupies a total land area of 6.5 sq mi (17 sq km); Macao city (pop., 1995 est.: 424,000) is the administrative center. Portuguese traders first arrived in 1513, and it soon became the chief market center for the trade between China and Japan. It was declared a Portuguese colony in 1849 and an overseas territory in 1951. In Dec. 1999 Portugal returned it to Chinese rule. Tourism and gambling are the mainstay of its economy.
macaw
Any of about 18 species of large tropical New World parrots (subfamily Psittacinae) with very long tails and big sickle-shaped beaks. Macaws eat fruits and nuts. They are easily tamed and often kept as pets; some learn to mimic human speech, but most only screech. A few have lived 65 years. Best known is the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), found from Mexico to Brazil, a 36-in. (90-cm) bright-red bird with blue and yellow wings, blue and red tail, and white face.
Manama
City (pop., 1995 est.: 148,000), capital of Bahrain. Situated at the NE tip of Bahrain island, it is Bahrain's largest city, with about one-third of the emirate's population, and is one of the Persian Gulf's most important ports. A commercial and financial center enriched by Bahrain's oil wealth, it is linked by causeway with the island city of Muharraq. First mentioned in Islamic chronicles c.1345, it was taken by the Portuguese in 1521 and by the Persians in 1602. It has been held, with brief interruptions, by the Al Khalifah dynasty since 1783. It was the seat of the British political resident for the Persian Gulf 1946-71, then it became the capital of independent Bahrain.
maqam
Spiritual stage that serves as a milestone on the path followed by Muslim mystics (Sufis) as they strive to reach the vision of and union with God. The Sufi progresses through his own spiritual efforts and through the guidance of sheikhs. In each maqam the Sufi strives to purify himself of all worldly inclinations and prepare himself to attain an ever higher spiritual level. Most Sufis identify seven major maqams: repentance, fear of the Lord, renunciation, poverty, patience, trust, and satisfaction. See also Sufism.
