macadam
Form of pavement invented by J. McAdam. McAdam's road cross-section consisted of a compacted subgrade of crushed granite or greenstone designed to support the load, covered by a surface of light stone to absorb wear and tear and shed water to the drainage ditches. In modern macadam construction, crushed stone or gravel is placed on the compacted base course and bound together with asphalt cement or hot tar. A third layer to fill the spaces is then added and rolled. Cement-sand slurry is sometimes used as the binder.


acacia
Any of the approximately 800 species of trees and shrubs that make up the genus Acacia, of the mimosa family, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly Australia and Africa. Sweet acacia (A. farnesiana) is native to the SW U.S. Acacias have distinctive, finely divided leaflets, and their leafstalks may bear thorns or sharp spines at their base. Their small, often fragrant, yellow or white flowers have many stamens apiece, giving each a fuzzy appearance. On the plains of S and E Africa, acacias are well-known landmarks. Several species are important economically, yielding substances such as gum arabic and tannin, as well as valuable timber.


caracal
Short-tailed cat (Felis caracal) found in hills, deserts, and plains of Africa, the Middle East, and central and SW Asia. It is sleek and short-haired, with a reddish brown coat and long tufts of black hairs on its pointed ears. Long-legged and short-tailed, it stands 16-18 in. (40-45 cm) and is 26-30 in. (66-76 cm) long, excluding its tail. Generally solitary and nocturnal, it preys on birds and mammals, incl. peafowl, gazelles, and hares. In Asia, where it has become rare, it has been trained as a hunting animal.


Caracas
City (pop. 1992: 1,965,000; metro. area pop.: 2,784,000), capital of Venezuela. Its Caribbean port is La Guaira. Lying at an altitude of about 3,000 ft (9,000 m), it is one of the most developed cities in Latin America. It was founded in 1567 by Diego de Losada; in 1595 it was sacked by the English. It was the birthplace of S. Bol\u00ed var (1783), under whose leadership it became the first colony to revolt from Spain (c.1810). Caracas has become the country's primary center of industry, commerce, education, and culture.


jacama
Leguminous vine (Pachyrhizus erosus, or P. tuberosus), also called yam bean. A native of Mexico and Central and S. America, it is grown for its edible root. The irregularly globular, brown-skinned tubers are white-fleshed, crisp, and juicy. There are two varieties, those with clear juice and those with milky juice. Both have a mild flavor and are eaten raw or cooked. Sometimes very young seedpods of the plant are eaten, but the mature seeds are highly toxic.
