Baluchis
Group of tribes speaking the Baluchi language and inhabiting the province of Baluchistan in Pakistan and neighboring areas of Iran, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and the Punjab (India). Some 70% of the total Baluchi population live in Pakistan, where they are divided into two groups, the Sulaimani and the Makrani. They probably came originally from the Iranian plateau, and are mentioned in 10th-cent. Arabic chronicles. Traditional Baluchis are nomads, but settled agricultural existence is becoming more common. They raise camels and other livestock and engage in carpet making and embroidery.
Malachi
One of the 12 Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. (His prophecy is part of a larger book, The Twelve, in the Jewish canon.) His name comes from a Hebrew word meaning "my messenger," suggesting that the author's real name is unknown. The book consists of dialogues in question-and-answer form, in which the prophet defends the justice of God to a community doubtful because its expectations of salvation for Israel are unfulfilled. Malachi calls for faithfulness to God's covenant and promises that the day of judgment will soon arrive. The book was probably written in the 5th cent. BC.
malachite
Widespread carbonate mineral of copper, a hydrous copper carbonate, Cu2CO3(OH)2. Because of its distinctive bright green color and its presence in the weathered zone of nearly all copper deposits, malachite serves as a prospecting guide. It is found in Siberia, France, Namibia, and Arizona in the U.S. Malachite has been used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone.
Mapuche
Most numerous group of Araucanian-speaking S. Amer. Indians (see Araucanians), who live in the central valley of Chile. They are noted for their 350-year struggle against Spanish and Chilean domination. In the 16th-18th cent. they learned to use horses in battle and united over great distances to fight Spanish incursions. After Chile gained independence in the 19th cent., the government settled them on reservations. In the 1980s the reservation land was transferred to individuals, but their hold on their land is endangered by indebtedness to support their nonintensive agriculture.
masochism
Psychosexual disorder in which an individual achieves erotic release by being subjected to pain or humiliation. The term is derived from the name of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, a 19th-cent. Austrian novelist who wrote extensively about the sexual enjoyment he derived from verbal and physical abuse. The amount of pain involved can vary from ritual humiliation with little violence to severe whipping or beating; it is usually sought out and to some degree controlled by the masochist. The traits of masochism and sadism often occur in the same individual.
