Lucian
Ancient Greek rhetorician, pamphleteer, and satirist. As a young man he acquired a Greek literary education while traveling through W Asia Minor. He became a public speaker before turning to writing essays. His works, outstanding for their mordant wit, are a sophisticated critique of the shams and follies of the literature, philosophy, and intellectual life of his day. In such works as Charon, Dialogues of the Dead, True History, and Nigrinus, he satirized nearly every aspect of human behavior. His best work of literary criticism is How to Write History.


Luciano
U.S. (Italian-born) gangster. He emigrated with his family to New York in 1906, and was soon involved in crime. In 1916 he joined Frank Costello and M. Lansky, earning the nickname "Lucky" by evading arrest and winning at craps. He joined crime boss Joe Masseria in 1920, and was soon directing Masseria's bootlegging, narcotics, and prostitution rackets. In 1931 he planned the assassinations of both Masseria and rival boss Salvatore Maranzano, and began developing a national crime syndicate. Jailed for extortion in 1936, he continued to direct crime operations from his prison cell. In 1946 his sentence was commuted and he was deported to Italy, where he continued to direct drug traffic and the smuggling of aliens into the U.S.


Lycia
Ancient district, SW Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. Located along the Mediterranean coast between Caria and Pamphylia, by the 8th cent. BC it was a thriving maritime country. It later fell to Cyrus, to Achaemenian Persia, and finally to Rome. Annexed to Roman Pamphylia in AD 43, it later became a separate Roman province after the 4th cent.


glycine
One of the nonessential amino acids. The simplest amino acid (NH2CH2COOH), it occurs in many proteins, especially silk fibroin and gelatin. It has a sweet taste and is used to reduce the bitter flavor of saccharin. Other uses are in organic synthesis and biochemical research, as a nutrient and feed additive, and to retard rancidity in animal and vegetable fats.


Lacan
French psychoanalyst. A practicing psychiatrist in Paris for much of his career, Lacan emphasized the primacy of language as the mirror of the unconscious mind and introduced the study of language into psychoanalytic theory. His major achievement was his reinterpretation of S. Freud's work in terms of structural linguistics. He became a celebrity in France with É crits (1966; The Language of the Self) and in the 1970s was a dominant figure in French cultural life as well as a strong influence on Amer. psychoanalytic and literary theory.


Lycaonia
Ancient region, S Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. Situated north of the Taurus Mtns., and bounded by Caria and Pamphylia, it was ruled by Alexander the Great, the Seleucids, the Attalids, and, finally, the Romans. Under Rome it was attached to Galatia and Cappadocia. From Seleucid times ...
