Luxor
Town (pop., 1991 est.: 142,000), Upper Egypt. Its name has been given to the S half of the ruins of Thebes. It is centered on the Great Temple of Amon, which was built on the E bank of the Nile River by King Amenhotep III in the 14th cent. BC. Tutankhamen and Horemheb completed the temple, and Ramses II added to it. Ruins include pillars and courts of the original temple as well as the remains of Coptic churches and a mosque. The town serves as a tourist center and as the market center for an agricultural district. See also Karnak.

usury
In law, the crime of charging an unlawfully high rate of interest. In Old English law, the taking of any compensation whatsoever was termed usury. With the expansion of trade in the 13th cent., the demand for credit increased, necessitating a modification in the definition of the term. In 1545 England fixed a legal maximum interest, a practice later followed by other Western nations.
