These include irritants (stimulants) such as cascara sagrada and castor oil, bulk formers such as bran and psyllium, saline laxatives such as Epsom salts or milk of magnesia, glycerin, lubricants such as mineral oil and some vegetable oils, and stool softeners. A high-fiber diet is more important than laxatives in correcting simple intestinal constipation.


Lucite
Trademark names of the organic compound polymethyl methacrylate, a synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. Colorless and highly transparent, it has high dimensional stability and good resistance to weathering and shock. It is used in aircraft canopies and windows, boat windshields, and the like. An object made of Lucite has the unusual property of keeping a beam of light reflected within its surfaces and thus carrying the beam around bends and corners; Lucite is therefore used in devices for illuminating interior organs during surgery, as well as for ornaments, medallions, and lenses.


lute
Plucked stringed instrument popular in 16th-17th-cent. Europe. It originated from the Arab ud, which reached Europe in the 13th cent. Like the ud, the lute has a deep pear-shaped body with an ornamental soundhole, a fretted neck with a bent-back pegbox, and strings hitched to a bridge glued to the instrument's belly. In later years it acquired several unstopped bass strings. It became the preferred instrument for cultivated amateur musicians and acquired an extensive literature of song accompaniments and solo and consort music.


lutite
Any fine-grained sedimentary rock consisting of clay- or silt-sized particles (less than 0.0025 in., or 0.06 mm, in diameter) that are derived principally from nonmarine (continental) rocks. Laminated lutites and lutites that split easily into thin layers are usually called shales. Other lutites may be called claystones, siltstones, or mudstones.
