Lazio
Autonomous region (pop., 1996 est.: 5,202,000), W central Italy, fronting the Tyrrhenian Sea. Established in 1948, its capital is Rome. In the east are the central Apennines, and in the west lies a coastal plain. Until the late 19th cent., most of its lowlands were marshy and malarial, but in the early 20th cent. these lands were drained and repopulated. Situated in the region previously known as Latium, it supports light industry, but the area is dominated by Rome.
albite
Common feldspar mineral, a sodium aluminosilicate (NaAlSi3O8) that occurs most widely in pegmatites and acid igneous rocks such as granites. It may also be found in low-grade metamorphic rocks (those formed under relatively low temperature and pressure conditions) and in certain sedimentary rocks. Albite usually forms brittle, glassy crystals that may be colorless, white, yellow, pink, green, or black. It is used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics, but its primary geologic importance is as a rock-forming mineral.
Babism
Religion that developed in Iran around Mirza Ali Muhammad's claim (1844) to be the Bab. Its beliefs are set forth in the Bayan, a holy book written by the Bab, which proclaims a universal law in place of all existing religious legal codes. Babism originated as a messianic movement in Shiite Islam. In 1867 the movement split, with the Azalis remaining faithful to the original teachings of the Bab and those of his successor Sobh-e Azal. Most Babis accepted the leadership of Sobh-e Azal's half-brother Baha Ullah, and under him the Baha'i faith was developed.
baboon
Any of five species of robust monkeys (genus Papio, or Chaeropithecus) of Arabia and sub-Saharan Africa. Baboons have a large head, cheek pouches, and a long, doglike muzzle. They walk on all fours, carrying the tail in a characteristic arch. They weigh 30-90 lbs (14-40 kg) and are about 20-45 in. (50-115 cm) long, excluding the tail (18-28 in., or 45-70 cm, long). Found mainly in drier savanna and rocky areas, they feed on a variety of plants and animals. Highly intelligent, they travel in large noisy troops, communicating by calls. They may destroy crops, and their enormous canine teeth and powerful limbs make them dangerous opponents.
cabildo
(Spanish: "municipal council") Fundamental unit of local government in colonial Latin America. It was in charge of all ordinary aspects of municipal government, incl. policing, sanitation, taxation, price and wage regulation, and the administration of justice. Its jurisdiction extended beyond the city to the surrounding hamlets and countryside. By the mid-16th cent. appointments to cabildos were usually made by the Spanish crown and could be sold or inherited. Cabildos were often corrupt, but cabildos abiertos (open town meetings) were important to the Latin Amer. independence movement of the early 19th cent.
