Abilene
City (pop., 1994 est.: 110,000), NW Texas. Founded in 1881 as the new railhead for the overland Texas cattle drives, it took the business of the previous railhead, Abilene, Kan. It is the site of several educational institutions, the W. Texas Fair, and the reconstructed Old Abilene Town.
Town (pop., 1996 est.: 6,500), Kansas. It lies on the Smoky Hill River east of Salina. Settled in 1858, it gained importance when it became the railway terminus for Texas cattle drives, and acquired a reputation for lawlessness; Wild Bill Hickok was its marshal in 1871. Pres. D. Eisenhower spent his boyhood there and is buried at the Eisenhower Center, which includes his family home and library.
albite
Common feldspar mineral, a sodium aluminosilicate (NaAlSi3O8) that occurs most widely in pegmatites and acid igneous rocks such as granites. It may also be found in low-grade metamorphic rocks (those formed under relatively low temperature and pressure conditions) and in certain sedimentary rocks. Albite usually forms brittle, glassy crystals that may be colorless, white, yellow, pink, green, or black. It is used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics, but its primary geologic importance is as a rock-forming mineral.
bile
Greenish-yellow liver secretion passed to the gallbladder for concentration, storage, or transport into the duodenum for fat digestion. Bile contains bile acids and salts, cholesterol, and electrolyte chemicals that keep it slightly acidic. In the intestine, products of the acids and salts emulsify fat and reduce its surface tension to prepare it for the action of pancreatic and intestinal fat-splitting enzymes.
cabildo
(Spanish: "municipal council") Fundamental unit of local government in colonial Latin America. It was in charge of all ordinary aspects of municipal government, incl. policing, sanitation, taxation, price and wage regulation, and the administration of justice. Its jurisdiction extended beyond the city to the surrounding hamlets and countryside. By the mid-16th cent. appointments to cabildos were usually made by the Spanish crown and could be sold or inherited. Cabildos were often corrupt, but cabildos abiertos (open town meetings) were important to the Latin Amer. independence movement of the early 19th cent.
cabinet
Body of senior ministers or, in the U.S., advisers to a chief executive, whose members also serve as the heads of government departments. The cabinet has become an integral part of parliamentary government in many countries, though its form varies. It developed from the British Privy Council, when King Charles II and Queen Anne regularly consulted the council's leading members to reach decisions before meeting with the unwieldy full council.
