Alvarado
Spanish soldier and colonial administrator. In 1519 he accompanied the army led by H. Cort\u00e9 s that conquered Mexico. In 1522 he became the first mayor of Tenochtitl\u00e1 n (Mexico City). In 1523 he conquered the native peoples of Guatemala and founded the city (modern Antigua) that became the first capital of the Guatemala region, which later included much of Central America. He was governor of Guatemala 1527-31. In 1539 he began an exploration of central Mexico, but died while quelling an Indian uprising.
Bara
U.S. film actress. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she had a brief stage career before going to Hollywood. Her first major picture, A Fool There Was (1915), was accompanied by a publicity campaign, billing her as the daughter of an Eastern potentate, that made her an instant success. Establishing a sultry, exotic persona, she became the prototype of the screen "vamp." She made more than 40 films within a few years, but her popularity soon declined, and she retired in the 1920s.
cabaret
Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions. The first German Kabarett was opened in Berlin c.1900 by Baron Ernst von Wolzogen and accompanied its musical acts with biting political satire. It became the center for underground political and literary expression and a showcase for the works of such social critics as B. Brecht and K. Weill, a decadent but fertile artistic milieu later portrayed in the musical Cabaret (1966). The English cabaret derived from concerts given in city taverns in the 18th-19th cent. and evolved into the music hall. In the U.S., the cabaret developed into the nightclub, where comedians, singers, or musicians performed. Small jazz and folk clubs and, later, comedy clubs evolved from the original cabaret.
cataract
Opacity of the eye's crystalline lens. Cataracts causing central visual-field defects are most likely to affect vision. Cataracts may occur in newborns and infants. Diabetes mellitus, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, or trauma can cause them in adults, but they most often occur with age, resulting from gradual loss of transparency of the lens. Treatment is a surgical procedure to replace the lens with an artificial one.
Gabar
Derogatory name applied to the Zoroastrian minority of Iran. The word may derive from the Arabic kafir ("infidel"). After the Muslim conquest of Persia in the 7th cent. BC, the Zoroastrians became an outcast minority, saddled with many social and economic disabilities. Since the 19th cent. they have received support from their coreligionists, the Parsis of India. Persecuted after the Islamic fundamentalist revolution of 1978-79, they currently number a few thousand.
