AARP
Nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that addresses the needs and interests of Americans aged 50 and older. It was founded in 1958 by a retired teacher, Ethel Andrus, and merged in 1982 with the National Retired Teachers Assn., also founded by Andrus (1947). Its bimonthly magazine, Modern Maturity, has the largest circulation of any U.S. periodical. Its membership of more than 30 million and its members' reliably high voting turnout have made it one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the U.S.


agaric
Any fungus of the family Agaricaceae, incl. the familiar commercially grown mushroom. Agarics have spore-bearing cells (basidia) located on thin sheets called gills. Best known of the agarics is the genus Agaricus (Psalliota), which includes some 60 species, the most prominent being the edible meadow or field mushroom, A. campestris, and the common cultivated mushroom, A. bisporus.


alanine
Either of two organic compounds. Alpha-alanine is one of the nonessential amino acids, found in most proteins and particularly abundant in fibroin, the protein in silk. It is used in research and as a dietary supplement. Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring amino acid not found in proteins. It is an important constituent of the vitamin pantothenic acid and is used in its synthesis, as well as in biochemical research, electroplating, and organic synthesis.


Alawi
Member of a minority sect of Shiite Islam. The sect, which exists mainly in Syria, traces its roots to the teachings of Muhammad ibn Nusayr al-Namiri (fl.850) and was chiefly established by Husayn ibn Hamdan al-Khasibi (d.957/958). Its basic doctrine includes a deification of Ali and an interpretation of the five Pillars of Islam as symbolic. Some of its religious practices are secret; it celebrates some Islamic and some Christian holidays.


Aldrich
U.S. film director and producer. Born in Cranston, R.I., he held various jobs at RKO from 1941, working under such directors as J. Renoir and C. Chaplin. After directing his first feature film, The Big Leaguer (1953), he formed his own production company and earned a reputation for tough, often violent films, incl. Apache (1954), The Big Knife (1955), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Hush . . . Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), and The Dirty Dozen (1967).

U.S. poet, short-story writer, and editor. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., he left school at 13 and soon began to contribute to newspapers and magazines. He was editor of TheAtlantic Monthly 1881-90. He drew on his childhood for his classic children's novel The Story of a Bad Boy (1870). His use of the surprise ending influenced the development of the short story in the U.S. His poems reflect New England culture and his experiences visiting Europe.
