Lapland
Region (pop., 1992 est.: 113,000), N Europe. Located within the Arctic Circle, it stretches across N Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and into Russia's Kola Peninsula. Occupying an area of 150,000 sq mi (389,000 sq km), it is bounded by the Norwegian Sea, the Barents Sea, and the White Sea. Since it straddles several national borders, it does not exist as any unified administrative entity. It is named for the Sami (Lapp) people, who have inhabited the region for several thousand years. Those who still practice reindeer herding have liberty of movement across national boundaries. Industries include mining and fishing.


Badlands
Barren region covering some 2,000 sq mi (5,200 sq km) of SW S. Dakota. It has an extremely rugged landscape almost devoid of vegetation. Created by cloudbursts that have cut deep gullies in poorly cemented bedrock, its extensive fossil deposits have yielded the remains of such animals as the three-toed horse, camel, saber-toothed tiger, and rhinoceros. Badlands National Park (379 sq mi, or 982 sq km), lying mostly between the Cheyenne and White rivers, was established as a national monument in 1939 and a national park in 1978.


Galland
German fighter ace. A skillful glider pilot by 20, he flew hundreds of missions in the Spanish Civil War. In World War II he led a fighter squadron in the Battle of Britain, destroying 100 British planes, and became commander of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm. Blamed by A. Hitler and H. G\u00f6 ring for the collapse of Germany's air defense against Anglo-Amer. bombing raids, he was relieved of his command in 1945. Briefly imprisoned at the war's end, he later became an adviser to the Argentine air force and an aviation consultant in W. Germany.


Garland
City (pop., 1996 est.: 190,000), N Texas. Bordering Dallas, it was founded when two rival railroad communities, Duck Creek and Embree, were consolidated in 1887. Its economy is industrialized and supplemented by the farm crops grown on the nearby Blacklands Belt. Manufactures include electronic equipment, chemicals, and scientific instruments.


Leland
U.S. engineer and manufacturer. Born in Danville,Vt., and trained as a machinist, he founded Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Co. in Detroit in 1890 to build engines for automobile makers. In 1904 he merged the company into his newly founded Cadillac Motor Car Co., where he created the successful Model A Cadillac. In 1917 he founded the Lincoln Motor Co., which was purchased by H. Ford in 1922. He was known for his rigorous standards; his innovations included the V-8 engine and adoption of the electric starter.


Oakland
City (pop., 1996 est.: 367,000), W California, on the E side of San Francisco Bay. Settled by the Spanish in 1820, it was incorporated as a city in 1854. In 1869 it was chosen as the terminus of the first transcontinental railroad, which led to the development of its ...
