AARP
Nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that addresses the needs and interests of Americans aged 50 and older. It was founded in 1958 by a retired teacher, Ethel Andrus, and merged in 1982 with the National Retired Teachers Assn., also founded by Andrus (1947). Its bimonthly magazine, Modern Maturity, has the largest circulation of any U.S. periodical. Its membership of more than 30 million and its members' reliably high voting turnout have made it one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the U.S.
Alda
U.S. actor, director, and screenwriter. Born in New York City, the son of actor Robert Alda (1914-1986), he acted in such Broadway plays as The Apple Tree and The Owl and the Pussycat and starred in the long-running television series M*A*S*H (1972-83), cowriting and directing many episodes and winning numerous Emmy awards. He has appeared in such films as Same Time, Next Year (1978) and Flirting with Disaster (1996); films he has directed include Sweet Liberty (1986) and Betsy's Wedding (1990).
ale
Fermented malt beverage, full-bodied and somewhat bitter, with strong flavor of hops. Until the 17th cent. it was an unhopped brew of yeast, water, and malt, beer being the same brew with hops added. Modern ale (now largely synonymous with beer) is made with top-fermenting yeast and processed at higher temperatures than lager beer. Pale ale has up to 5% alcohol content; the darker strong ale contains up to 6.5%.
Alea
Cuban film director. After earning a law degree in Cuba, he studied filmmaking in Rome (1951-53). A supporter of F. Castro, he helped develop Cuba's film industry after 1959 and made the Communist regime's first official feature film, Stories of the Revolution (1960). Later he worked within the restrictions of the regime to satirize and explore various aspects of life in postrevolutionary Cuba in such internationally acclaimed films as Death of a Bureaucrat (1966), Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), The Survivors (1978), and Strawberry and Chocolate (1993). He is regarded as the finest director Cuba has produced.
aloe
Any shrubby succulent plant of the genus Aloe in the lily family, containing about 200 species native to Africa. Most aloes have a rosette of leaves at the base but no stem. Several species are cultivated as ornamentals. The juice of some species, especially the popular pot plant known as true aloe (Aloe vera), is used as an ingredient in cosmetics, as a purgative, and as a treatment for burns.

The Alps extend in a crescent about 750 mi (1,200 km) from the Mediterranean coast between France and Italy to Vienna, and cover more than 80,000 sq mi (207,000 sq km).
