Apia
Seaport town (pop., 1995 est.: 33,000) and capital, Samoa. It lies on the N coast of Upolu Island. Its economy centers on the export of goods to Amer. Samoa. R. L. Stevenson is buried at nearby Mt. Vaea; Vailima, his former home, is now the residence of the head of state.
Apis
In ancient Egyptian religion, a sacred bull deity worshiped at Memphis. The cult originated at least as early as the 1st dynasty (c.2925-c.2775 BC). Apis was probably at first a fertility god but became associated with Ptah and also with Osiris and Sokaris, gods of the dead. When an Apis bull died, it was buried with great pomp, and the calf that was to be its successor was installed at Memphis. Apis's priests drew omens from the bull's behavior, and his oracle had a wide reputation. The worship of Serapis (a combination of Osiris and Apis) probably arose at Memphis in the 3rd cent. BC and became one of the most widespread oriental cults in the Roman empire.
epic
Long narrative poem in an elevated style that celebrates heroic achievement and treats themes of historical, national, religious, or legendary significance. Primary (or traditional) epics are shaped from the legends and traditions of a heroic age and are part of oral tradition; secondary (or literary) epics are written down from the beginning, and their poets adapt aspects of traditional epics. The poems of Homer are usually regarded as the first important epics and the main source of epic conventions in Western Europe. These conventions include the centrality of a hero, sometimes semidivine; an extensive, perhaps cosmic, setting; heroic battle; extended journeying; and the involvement of supernatural beings.
pi
In mathematics, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. An irrational number (see also transcendental number), its approximate value is 3.14159265, but its exact value must be represented by a symbol, the Greek letter p. Pi is used in calculations involving lengths, areas, and volumes of circles, spheres, cylinders, and cones. It also arises frequently in problems dealing with certain periodic phenomena (e.g., motion of pendulums, alternating electric currents). To make such calculations precise, modern computers have carried pi to more than a hundred million decimal places.
alien
In law, one who resides in a country without becoming naturalized, retaining instead the citizenship of another country. The laws of most nations have long afforded aliens certain minimum standards of civilized treatment but have also restricted their employment and ownership of property. Under U.S. law, all aliens have had to register since 1940. Registration cards ("green cards") entitle them to obtain employment.
