anemia
Condition in which erythrocytes are reduced in number or volume or are deficient in hemoglobin. The patient is usually noticeably pale. Close to 100 varieties exist (incl. aplastic anemia, pernicious anemia, and sickle-cell anemia), distinguished by cause; erythrocyte size, shape, and hemoglobin content; and symptoms. Anemia may result from blood loss; increased destruction, reduced production, or inhibited formation of red cells; or hormone deficiency. Treatment may involve nutrition, toxin removal, drugs, surgery, or transfusion. See also folic-acid-deficiency anemia, iron-deficiency anemia.
Knesset
(Hebrew: "Assembly") Unicameral national legislature of Israel. The first Knesset opened in 1949. Its name and the number of its seats (120) are based on the Jewish assembly of biblical times; its traditions and organization are based on the Zionist Congress, the political system of the Jewish community in pre-Israel Palestine, and more loosely the British House of Commons. Its members are elected by proportional representation for four-year terms; candidates are chosen by their parties.
Liezi
Chinese Taoist philosopher. He was one of the three primary philosophers who developed the tenets of Taoist thought, and he is the presumed author of the Taoist work Liehzi. Many of the writings traditionally attributed to him have been identified as later forgeries, but he is still widely believed to have been a historical figure.
Chinese Taoist classic. Though Liezi is traditionally named as its author, in its present form it probably dates from the 3rd or 4th cent. AD. Like earlier Taoist classics, it emphasizes the mysterious tao (way). The "Yang Zhu" chapter acknowledges the futility of challenging the tao and asserts that all we can look forward to in life is sex, music, physical beauty, and material abundance--a fatalistic belief in a life of radical self-interest was a new development in Taoism.
