Kanuri
African people, the dominant population (4 million) of Borno state in NE Nigeria, also found in large numbers in SE Niger. The Kanuri language is of the Nilo-Saharan family. The Kanuri developed the powerful empire of Bornu, which reached its peak in the 16th cent. They have been Muslims since the 11th cent. The Kanuri economy is based on millet agriculture and trade with the Fulani and Arab herders.


kagura
In Shinto, a traditional style of music and dancing used in religious ceremonies. Kagura dances dedicated to native deities are a reenactment of the propitiatory dance that lured the sun goddess Amaterasu from her cave in ancient myth. Largely unchanged for the past 1,500 years, the dances are performed to the accompaniment of chants, drums, brass gongs, and flutes. The music is of two types: one to praise the spirits or seek their aid, the other to entertain the gods.


Koguryo
Largest of the three kingdoms into which ancient Korea was divided until 668. Tradition sets its founding at 37 BC, but modern historians believe the tribal state was formed in the 2nd cent. BC. Eventually the N half of the Korean peninsula, the Liaodong Peninsula, and much of Manchuria were under Koguryo's rule. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism all influenced the kingdom, which fell to the allied forces of China's Tang dynasty and the S Korean kingdom of Silla in 668. Numerous surviving tomb paintings give a good picture of the life, ideology, and character of Koguryo's forceful, horse-riding N people. See also Parhae.


Kraus
Austrian journalist, critic, playwright, and poet. In 1899 he founded Die Fackel, a literary and political review, and by 1911 he had become its sole author; he continued to publish it until the year of his death. Believing that language was of great moral and aesthetic importance, he wrote with masterly precision, and his writings exercised wide influence. His works, which are almost untranslatably idiomatic, include Morality and Criminality (an essay collection, 1908), Proverbs and Contradictions (a collection of aphorisms, 1909), and The Last Days of Humanity (a lengthy satirical drama, 1922).


manure
Organic material that is used to fertilize land, usually consisting of the feces and urine of domestic livestock, with or without litter such as straw, hay, or bedding. Some countries also use human excrement ("night soil"). Though livestock manure is less rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash than synthetic fertilizers and therefore must be applied in much greater quantities, it is rich in organic matter, or humus, and thus improves the capacity of the soil to absorb and store water, thereby preventing erosion. Because manure must be carefully stored and spread in order to derive the most benefit, some farmers decline to expend the necessary time and effort.
