tick
Any of some 825 parasitic arachnid species (suborder Ixodida, order Parasitiformes), found worldwide. Adults may be slightly more than an inch (30 mm) long, but most species are much smaller. Hard ticks start and end each developmental stage--egg, larva, nymph, adult--on the ground; at the completion of each stage, they attach to a host (usually a mammal), engorge on blood, then drop to the ground. Soft ticks feed intermittently, pass through several nymphal stages, and live in the host's den or nest. Hard ticks may draw large amounts of blood, secrete paralyzing or lethal neurotoxins, and transmit diseases. Soft ticks may also carry diseases. The deer tick is the principal vector of Lyme disease.


Bioko
Island (pop., 1983: 58,000), Bight of Biafra, W. Africa. It lies 100 mi (160 km) northwest of continental Equatorial Guinea, of which it is a part. Bioko became the official name in 1979. Volcanic in origin, with an area of 779 sq mi (2,018 sq km), it rises sharply from the sea; its highest point is Santa Isabel Peak, at 9,869 ft (3,008 m). Malabo, the country's capital, is located on Bioko. The island was visited by the Portuguese explorer Fernã o Pó , probably in 1472. Though claimed by Spain after 1778, the first attempt at firm Spanish control came only in 1858. The original inhabitants, the Bubi, are descendants of Bantu-speaking migrants from the mainland. Many Fang have flocked to the island from the continent.


Bock
U.S. composer. Born in New Haven, Conn., he studied at the Univ. of Wisconsin, then collaborated with Larry Holofcener (b.1926) on songs for television's Your Show of Shows and the musical Mr. Wonderful (1956). With the composer-lyricist Sheldon Harnick (b.1924), he had his greatest successes, Fiorello! (1959, Pulitzer Prize) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964). Bock and Harnick's other musicals included The Body Beautiful (1958), Tenderloin (1960), the admired She Loves Me (1963), The Apple Tree (1966), and The Rothschilds (1966).


cicada
Any insect in the order Homoptera having two pairs of membranous wings, prominent compound eyes, and three simple eyes (ocelli). Most of the 1,500 known species are in the family Cicadidae and are found in tropical deserts, grasslands, and forests. Males produce loud noises by vibrating membranes near the base of the abdomen. Most N. Amer. cicadas produce rhythmical ticks, buzzes, or whines, though the "song" of some species is musical. The species are easily distinguishable by song, behavior, and appearance. Periodic cicadas (species that occur in large numbers in chronologically and geographically isolated broods) appear in regular cycles, incl. the well-known 17-year cicada (often erroneously called the 17-year locust) and 13-year cicada.
