Outstanding light vehicle of World War II, developed by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. It weighed 11 / 4 tons, had a four-cylinder engine, and could climb 60° grades and operate on rough terrain thanks to its four-wheel drive and high clearance. Its name came from its military designation: "vehicle, GP" (i.e., general-purpose). After the war it became widely used in civilian life.
kelp
Any of about 30 genera of large seaweeds that make up the order Laminariales (brown algae), found in colder seas.Laminaria, abundant along the Pacific coasts and the British Isles, is a source of commercial iodine. Its stipe (stemlike structure) is 3-10 ft (1-3 m) long. The largest known kelp, Macrocystis, grows up to 215 ft (65 m) long. Its body, which has a large rootlike holdfast, a hollow stipe, and branching blades with hollow gas bladders, resembles that of higher plants. It is rich in minerals and algin, a complex carbohydrate used as an emulsifier to prevent crystal formation in ice cream. Species of kelp are widely eaten in E. Asia.
Kempe
English mystic. She had 14 children before beginning a series of pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Rome, Germany, and Spain in 1414. Apparently illiterate, she dictated her autobiography, Book of Margery Kempe, describing her travels and her religious ecstasies in an unaffected style (c.1432-36). It is one of the earliest autobiographies in English literature.
beef
Flesh of mature cattle, as distinguished from veal, the flesh of calves. The best beef is obtained from steers (castrated males) and heifers (female cows that have not calved). Tenderness and flavor are improved by aging; in one common method, the carcass is hung for about two weeks at approx. 36° F (2° C). The world's primary beef producers and consumers are the U.S., the European Union, Brazil, China, Argentina, and Australia. Grading standards are relatively uniform; in the U.S., grades range from prime and choice to utility and canner. Beef provides protein and B vitamins; it also contains saturated fat, an excess of which can contribute to heart disease and other health problems. Beef is not eaten by Hindus because of the sacred status of the cow.
beer
Alcoholic beverage made usually from malted barley, flavored with hops, and brewed by slow fermentation. Known from ancient times, beer was especially common in northern climates not conducive to grape cultivation for wine. It is produced by employing either a bottom-fermenting yeast, which falls to the bottom of the container when fermentation is completed, or a top-fermenting yeast, which rises to the surface. Lager beers (from lagern, "to store"), of German origin, are bottom-fermented and stored at a low temperature for several months; most are light in color, with high carbonation, medium hop flavor, and alcohol content of 3-5% by volume.
