Karpov
Russian chess master. A child prodigy, he learned chess at the age of 4. He became world champion in 1975 when B. Fischer declined to meet him in tournament play. He defended his title (48-game draw) in 1984-85 against G. Kasparov, but lost to Kasparov later in 1985. He regained the championship in 1993 after Kasparov was stripped of the title for organizing a new chess federation.
