Kael
U.S. film critic. Born in Petaluma, Cal., she managed an art-film theater in Berkeley (1955-60) while writing film reviews for magazines and broadcasting her reviews on network radio. After a collection of her reviews and essays, I Lost It at the Movies (1965), gained her national attention, she moved to New York and became film critic for The New Yorker (1968-91). Her witty, biting, highly opinionated, and sharply focused reviews (of which five more collections were eventually published) made her perhaps the most influential film critic of all time.
Maes
Dutch painter. A native of Dordrecht, he went to Amsterdam c.1650 to study with Rembrandt. Before his return to Dordrecht in 1653 he painted a few life-size Rembrandtesque genre scenes. From 1655 to 1660 he painted smaller domestic scenes, usually of women spinning, eavesdropping, reading the Bible, or cooking. In 1673 he moved permanently to Amsterdam and devoted himself to portraiture, abandoning intimacy and the deep glowing colors characteristic of Rembrandt for elegance and cooler tones reminiscent of A. Van Dyck. He was a prolific painter and his portraits enjoyed great success.
Ake
Nigerian political scientist and activist. He received his PhD from Columbia Univ. in 1966. He founded the Center for Advanced Social Science in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and was active in efforts to uncover environmental and human-rights abuses by the Nigerian government. His books on African development and politics made him one of Africa's leading political scientists. He served as a consultant to Royal Dutch/Shell Group, but angrily resigned in 1995 to protest the execution of the activist K. Saro-Wiwa. He died the next year in a plane crash, whose cause has been disputed.
Ares
Greek god of war. Unlike his Roman counterpart, Mars, his worship was not extensive. From the time of Homer, he was one of the Olympian deities, the son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by the other gods. His worship occurred largely in N Greece. He was associated from early times with Aphrodite, occasionally portrayed as his legitimate wife and at other times his lover. He was accompanied in battle by his sister Eris (strife) and by two of his children by Aphrodite, Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Rout).
ass
Either of two species of small, sturdy equines. Asses are 3-5 ft (90-150 cm) high at the shoulder. The African wild ass, or true ass (Equus asinus) is bluish gray to fawn; the Asiatic wild ass, or half-ass (E. hemionus) is reddish to yellow-gray. The half-ass differs from the true ass in that it has extremely long, slender legs, shorter ears, and larger hooves. The true ass has the alternating "hee-haw" bray. Desert dwellers, wild asses often inhabit regions that cannot support other large mammals. They are very swift runners. See also donkey.
