Karen
Variety of tribal peoples of S Myanmar. The Karen are not a unitary group in any ethnic sense, differing linguistically, religiously, and economically. Rather, they have defined themselves in terms of their common distrust of political domination by Myanmar (in which they are the second-largest minority), which has persisted since the country attained independence in 1948.
Kearny
U.S. Army officer. Born in Newark, N.J., he served in the War of 1812 and later on the W frontier. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was ordered to seize New Mexico and California. Using diplomacy to persuade Mexican troops to withdraw, he marched unopposed to Santa Fe, where in 1846 he proclaimed a civil government for the province. He left for California, where R. Stockton and J. Fr\u00e9 mont had already assumed command. Their forces combined to defeat Mexican rebels in 1847 and, after initial opposition by Fr\u00e9 mont, established a stable government. Sent to Mexico, Kearney died of yellow fever.

Bern
City (pop., 1996: 127,000; metro area pop.: 320,000), capital of Switzerland. Lying along a loop of the Aare River, it was founded as a military post in 1191 by Berthold V, duke of Z\u00e4 hringen. It became a free imperial city in 1218. Gradually extending its power, it became an independent state, and in 1353 it entered the Swiss Confederation. It was a scene of disputation in 1528 between Roman Catholics and reformers, which led to its subsequent championing of Protestant doctrines. It became a member of the Helvetic Republic, and in 1848 was made the capital of Switzerland. It is headquarters of the international postal, railway, and copyright unions.
Caen
City (pop., 1990: 116,000), NW France. Situated on the Orne River, it was the capital of lower Normandy in the 11th cent. The English took it in 1346 and 1417 and held it until 1450. It suffered in the Wars of Religion and fell to the Protestants in 1562. During the French Revolution, it was a center for the Girondin movement. The city was severely damaged in the Allied Normandy Campaign (1944), but it was rebuilt. Notable structures include the 11th-cent. abbey and the university. It is a transportation center and manufactures automobiles and electrical equipment.
