Possible definitions for kabaka
Baraka
U.S. playwright and black nationalist. He was born in Newark, N.J., and educated at Howard Univ. His first play, Dutchman (1964), produced off-Broadway, explored the suppressed hostility of U.S. blacks toward the dominant white culture. The Slave and The Toilet, also produced in 1964, aroused controversy. He founded the Black Arts Repertory Theater in Harlem and in 1968 founded the Black Community Development and Defense Organization, a Black Muslim group, to affirm black culture and promote black political power. He has also written volumes of poetry and essays.
Erbakan
First Islamic-party politician to win a general election in Turkey (1995). Son of an Ottoman-era religious court judge, he studied mechanical engineering before being elected to the National Assembly in 1969. He formed an Islamic party in 1970 and again in 1972 and served twice as deputy prime minister. His third attempt to form a party created the Refah (Welfare) Party, which won the most seats in the 1995 elections. He formed a coalition government in 1996, but his party was outlawed in 1997 and he was banned from politics.
Habakkuk
One of the 12 Minor Prophets of the Old Testament, traditional author of the Book of Habakkuk. (His prophecy is part of a larger book, The Twelve, in the Jewish canon.) He was perhaps a Temple musician as well as a prophet. He denounced the sins of Judah, identifying their enemies the Chaldeans (Babylonians) as an instrument of God's punishment, but also predicted the final triumph of righteousness.
Kaaba
Most sacred Muslim shrine, located near the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca. All Muslims face toward it in their daily prayers. The cube-shaped structure, made of gray stone and marble, has its corners roughly oriented to the points of the compass; the interior contains only pillars and silver and gold lamps. Pilgrims to Mecca walk around the Kaaba seven times and touch the Black Stone of Mecca on its E side, which may date from the pre-Islamic religion of the Arabs. Tradition holds that the Kaaba was built by Abraham and Ishmael. In 630 Muhammad purged the place of its pagan idols and rededicated it to Islam.
Kabila
Leader of rebel forces in Zaire (now Congo) that in 1997 overthrew the government of Mobutu Sese Seko. Kabila attended schools abroad, incl. military school in China, before participating in several Marxist-inspired uprisings in Zaire in the 1960s and '70s. He later became a trader in precious minerals and ivory. In the Rwandan civil war, Kabila collaborated with P. Kagame in attacking Hutu guerrilla groups in Zaire as well as Zairean government forces. His troops ousted Mobutu in 1997, and Kabila proclaimed himself president and renamed the country. His repressive policies soon led to a new and larger war, in which many African states sent troops and aid to both sides.
