duke
European title of nobility, the highest rank below a prince or king except in countries having such titles as archduke or grand duke. The wife of a duke is a duchess. The Romans gave the title dux to high military commanders with territorial responsibilities. It was adopted by the barbarian invaders of the Roman empire and was used in their kingdoms and also in France and Germany for rulers of very large areas. In some European countries a duke is a sovereign prince who rules an independent duchy. In Britain, where there were no ducal titles until 1337, it is a hereditary title.

Juneau
City (pop., 1995 est.: 30,000), capital of Alaska. Located in SE Alaska, it was settled in 1880 when Joe Juneau and Richard Harris discovered gold nearby. Mining was important until the Alaska-Juneau gold mine closed in 1944. Juneau was made the state capital in 1959. Fishing, forestry, and government activities are important, as is tourism. In 1970 Juneau merged with Douglas, on an island across the channel, to form the largest U.S. city in area (3,108 sq mi, or 8,050 sq km).

jute
Either of two herbaceous annuals (Corchorus capsularis and C. olitorius) in the linden family, or their fiber. The plants grow 10-12 ft (3-4 m) high and have long, serrated, tapered, light-green leaves and small yellow flowers. Jute has been grown and processed in the Bengal area of India (and of present-day Bangladesh) since ancient times. Its biggest use is in burlap sacks and bags, which are used to ship and store many agricultural products. High-quality jute cloths are used as backing for tufted carpets and hooked rugs. Coarser jute fibers are made into twines, rough cordage, and doormats.

Juvenal
Roman poet. He probably came from a well-to-do family, became an army officer, and grew embittered by failure to receive a promotion. He is chiefly known for his 16 Satires, indignant attacks on human brutality and folly, particularly the corruption of Roman society under Domitian and his more humane successors Nerva, Trajan, and Hadrian. His verses are technically fine, vivid, and often ruthless, and have been admired and imitated since the 5th cent., and many of his phrases and epigrams ("bread and circuses," "who will guard the guards themselves?" etc.) have entered common parlance.
