colon
Segment that makes up most of the large intestine. Though the two terms are often used interchangeably, the colon technically excludes the cecum (a pouch at the beginning of the large intestine), rectum, and anal canal. It runs up the right side of the abdomen (ascending colon), across it (transverse colon), and down the left side (descending colon); its last section (sigmoid colon) joins the rectum. It has no digestive function but lubricates waste products, absorbs remaining fluids and salts, and stores waste products until excretion. Problems involving the colon include colitis, constipation and diarrhea, gas discomfort, megacolon (enlarged colon), and cancer.


color
Aspect of any object that may be described in terms of hue, brightness, and saturation. It is associated with the visible wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, which stimulate the sensor cells of the eye. Red light has the longest wavelengths, while blue has the shortest, with other colors such as orange, yellow, and green between. Hue refers to dominant wavelengths. Brightness refers to the intensity or degree of shading. Saturation pertains to purity, or the amount of white light mixed with a hue. The colors red, green, and blue, known as primary colors, can be combined in varying proportions to produce all other colors. Primary colors combined in equal proportions produce secondary colors. Two colors that combine to form white light are said to be complementary.


polo
Game played by teams of players on horseback using mallets with long flexible handles to drive a wooden ball through goalposts. It was first played in Persia in the 6th cent. BC; from there it spread to Arabia, Tibet (polo is Balti for "ball"), S. Asia, and the Far East. The first British polo clubs were formed in India in the mid-19th cent.; the game came to the U.S. a few decades later. Polo has long been primarily played by the wealthy, because of the expense of acquiring and maintaining a stable of polo "ponies" (actually full-sized adult horses, bred for docility, speed, endurance, and intelligence). The standard team is made up of four players whose positions are numbered 1-4. A game consists of six 71 / 2-minute periods called chukkers or chukkas. The field is 300 yards (274.3 m) long by 160 yards (146.3 m) wide; an indoor version of the game is played on a smaller field.
