Ailey
U.S. dancer and choreographer. Born in Rogers, Texas, he moved to Los Angeles in 1942, where he studied dance and choreography (1949-54). He then moved to New York, where he performed in various theatrical productions. In 1958 he founded the Alvin Ailey Amer. Dance Theater, composed primarily of blacks. The numerous works he choreographed for the company included its signature Revelations (1960), set to black spirituals. From the 1960s to the 1980s the company toured worldwide, making Ailey one of the best-known U.S. choreographers. After his death from AIDS, J. Jamison assumed the title of artistic director of the company.
civet
Any of 15-20 species of long-bodied, short-legged carnivores (family Viverridae) found in Africa, S Europe, and Asia. Catlike in appearance, civets have a thickly furred tail, small ears, and pointed snout. Civets are commonly buff or grayish, with black spots or stripes or both. They range in length from 16 to 34 in. (40-85 cm), excluding the 5-26-in. (13-66-cm) tail, and in weight from 3.3 to 24 lbs (1.5-11 kg). Civets mark territories with a greasy, musklike secretion (called civet) stored in a pouch under the tail; civet is sometimes used in the manufacture of perfumes. Usually solitary, civets feed on small animals and on vegetable matter. Five species are considered in possible danger of extinction.
hives
Allergic skin reaction in which slightly raised, flat-topped, very itchy swellings appear suddenly. The acute form, probably most often caused by food allergies, subsides in 6-24 hours, but the chronic form, believed to be due to emotional and mental stress, lasts much longer. Acute hives may also be triggered by drugs, especially penicillin, inhaled allergens or toxins, or diseases. Treatment involves identifying and avoiding the allergen; epinephrine and antihistamines may help the acute skin symptoms.
ivy
Any of about five species of evergreen woody vines (rarely shrubs) that make up the genus Hedera in the ginseng family, commonly grown as ground covers and on stone walls, especially English ivy (H. helix), which climbs by aerial roots with adhering disks that develop on the stems. The tough, dark-green leaves of English ivy have three to five lobes and tend to droop horizontally from the stem. Unrelated plants called ivies include Boston ivy (Parthenocissus, or Ampelopsis, tricuspidata), a clinging woody vine in the grape family whose leaves turn bright scarlet in autumn, and poison ivy.
