Tenniel
British illustrator and satirical artist. After attracting attention with his mural decorations, he was invited to contribute drawings to Punch magazine in 1850, and in time became its chief cartoonist. His drawings lent new dignity to the political cartoon. Of his many book illustrations, best known are those for L. Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872), remarkable for their subtlety and cleverness.


Cennini
Italian painter and writer active in Florence. A few surviving paintings are attributed to him, but he is best known as the author of Il libro dell'arte (The Craftsman's Handbook, c.1390), the most important sourcebook on artistic practice in the late Middle Ages. His detailed descriptions of tempera and fresco painting reflect the technical procedures of the great Florentine painting tradition. He believed that painting held a high place among occupations because it combined theory or imagination with the skill of the hand.


Ennin
Japanese Buddhist who founded the Sammon branch of the Tendai (Tiantai) sect. Educated in the Enryaku-ji monastery near Kyoto, he was a disciple of Saicho. He spent nine years studying Buddhism in China, returning home in AD 847 with 559 volumes of Chinese Buddhist texts and a system of musical notation for religious chants that is still used in Japan. He introduced to Japanese Buddhism the practice of chanting the name of Amida (Amitabha) as a route to rebirth in Amida's paradise. He also established Tendai esotericism. He became chief priest of his order in 854, and his teachings were influential in Japanese Buddhism for centuries.


Henie
Norwegian-U.S. figure skater. Born in Kristiania, she was trained in ballet. She won the world amateur championship for women 10 consecutive years (1927-36) and won three gold medals in the Winter Olympics (1928, 1932, 1936). With her dancer's training, she was largely responsible for converting a predictable series of colorless exercises into a spectacular and popular exhibition. She achieved further renown as a professional ice skater and movie actress. In 1941 she became an Amer. citizen.


jinni
In Arabic mythology, any of the supernatural spirits less powerful than angels or devils. Evil spirits of air or fire, they could take animal or human form and could dwell in inanimate objects or under the earth. They had the bodily needs of human beings and could be killed, but were otherwise free of physical restraints. Jinn delighted in punishing humans for any harm done to them, but people who knew the proper magical procedure could exploit them to their own advantage. The jinn were popular subjects for folklore, notably in the tale of Aladdin in TheThousand and One Nights..
