jasmine
Any of about 300 tropical and subtropical species of fragrant, flowering, woody, climbing shrubs that make up the genus Jasminum of the olive family, native to all continents except N. America. The jasmine used in perfumery and aromatherapy comes from the fragrant white flowers of common, or poet's, jasmine (J. officinale), native to Iran. The dried flowers of Arabian jasmine (J. sambac) make jasmine tea. Many fragrant-flowered plants from other families are also commonly called jasmine.


Jellinek
U.S. physiologist. Born in New York City, he studied at the Univ. of Leipzig and worked in Budapest, Sierra Leone, and Honduras before returning to the U.S., where he studied alcoholism. He was an early proponent of the disease theory, arguing with great persuasiveness that alcoholics should be treated as sick people. He gathered and summarized his and others' research in the authoritative Alcohol Explored (1942) and The Disease Concept of Alcoholism (1960).


Jilin
Province (pop. 1996 est.: 25,920,000), NE China. It is China's most urbanized province; its capital is Changchun, and its second largest city is Jilin. Its major river is the Sungari River, a tributary of the Amur. It was made a province in 1907. Occupied by the Japanese army in 1931, it became part of the puppet state of Manchukuo (1932-45). Chinese communist forces seized the province from the Nationalists in 1948. Industrialization in the late 20th cent. has been rapid.


marlin
Any of four species (genus Makaira, family Istiophoridae) of deep-blue to blue-green marine fish with a long body, a long dorsal fin, a rounded spear extending from the snout (which it uses to club the fish it feeds on), and usually pale vertical stripes. They are highly prized for sport and food. Species range in weight from about 100 lbs (45 kg) to more than 1,500 lbs (700 kg). The Indo-Pacific black marlin (M. nigicans) has a distinctive, stiff pectoral fin set at an angle.


Saarinen
U.S. (Finnish-born) architect. His father, Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950), was the foremost Finnish architect of his time; his major works include the Helsinki railway station (1904-14) and--after emigrating to the U.S. in 1923--the buildings of the Cranbrook Foundation, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (1925-41). Eero joined his father's practice after studying at Yale. His vast General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich. (1948-56), was followed in 1948 by his design for St. Louis's Gateway Arch (completed 1965). In the Kresge Auditorium and chapel at MIT (1955), he used a "handkerchief" dome resting on three points for the auditorium and a stark red-brick cylinder for the chapel. His TWA terminal at Kennedy International Airport (1956-62) employs two cantilevered concrete shells that extend dramatically outward, suggesting wings.
