Inverness
City (pop., 1991 est.: 63,000), NW Scotland. Located on the River Ness and the Caledonian Canal in NW Scotland, it has long been the center of the Scots Highland region, and is the headquarters for the Highlands administrative region. In the 6th cent. it was the capital of the Pictish kingdom of King Brude. By the 12th cent. it had become a burgh near the castle of Malcolm III Canmore. It is now an educational and tourist center, and its manufacturing is expanding as the offshore oil industry develops.
