Ibadan
City (pop., 1996 est.: 1,432,000), SW Nigeria. Situated northeast of Lagos, it is the nation's second largest city. The modern city grew from a camp set up by the armies of the Ife, Ijebu, and Oyo peoples in 1829; it was taken by the British in 1893. An important commercial center, it contains six parks, incl. Agodi Garden. It is the seat of the Univ. of Ibadan.
Inari
In Japanese mythology, the patron god of rice cultivation and prosperity. He was worshiped especially by merchants and tradesmen, and he also served as patron deity of swordsmiths, brothels, and entertainers. Inari was variously depicted as a bearded old man riding a fox or as a woman with long hair carrying sheaves of rice. The fox is sometimes identified as his messenger. The god's most popular shrine is the Fushimi Inari Shrine near Kyoto.

India has three major geographic regions: the Himalayas which form its N border; the Indo-Gangetic Plain, formed by the alluvial deposits of three great river systems, incl. the Ganges; and the S region, noted for the Deccan plateau. Agricultural products include rice, wheat, cotton, sugarcane, coconut, spices, jute, tobacco, tea, coffee, and rubber. Its manufacturing sector is highly diversified and includes both heavy and high-technology industries. It is a republic with two legislative houses; its chief of state is the president, and the head of government is the prime minister. India has been inhabited for thousands of years. Agriculture in India dates back to the 7th millennium BC, and an urban civilization, that of the Indus valley, was established by 2600 BC. Buddhism and Jainism arose in the 6th cent. BC in reaction to the caste-based society created by the Vedic religion and its successor, Hinduism. Muslin invasions began c.AD 1000, establishing the long-lived Delhi sultanate in 1206 and the Mughal dynasty in 1526. V. da Gama's voyage to India in 1498 initiated several centuries of commercial rivalry among the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and French. British conquests in the 18th and 19th cent. led to the rule of the British East India Co. and direct administration by the British empire began in 1858. After M.
