Fife
Historical area and administrative region (pop., 1995 est.: 352,000), E Scotland. An ancient Pictish kingdom, Fife became one of Scotland's leading provinces, and one of the kingdom's seven earldoms. Modern Fife consists largely of an agricultural northeast and an industrial southwest. Coal mining has long dominated its industry, which is supplemented now by manufacturing and light industries. The administrative region's headquarters is Glenrothes.


Ifat
Muslim state (1285-1415), central Ethiopia. Flourishing in the fertile uplands, it was established through the conquests of a 13th-cent. ruler known as Walashma. It served as a buffer between the pagan kingdom of Damot and the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia. Ifat was conquered by the Ethiopian king Amda Tseyon in 1328 and made tributary to Ethiopia. After a long series of revolts, it was destroyed in 1415 when it was annexed to Ethiopia.


Ifni
Region, SW Morocco. Located on the Atlantic Coast, it has an area of 580 sq mi (1500 sq km). It was first settled in 1476 by Diego Garcí a de Herrera, lord of the Canaries, as a Spanish fishing, slaving, and trading locality. Abandoned in 1524 because of disease and Moorish hostility, it was reclaimed following a Spanish-Moroccan treaty in 1860. Effective Spanish reoccupation began in 1934, and it became part of Spanish W. Africa in 1946. Ifni was ceded to Morocco in 1969.


Offa
One of the most powerful kings in Anglo-Saxon England. He became king of Mercia (757-96) after seizing power during a civil war. He extended his rule over most of S England and married his daughters to the rulers of Wessex and Northumbria. Eager to form European diplomatic ties, Offa signed a commercial treaty with Charlemagne (796) and allowed the pope to increase his control over the English church. He built Offa's Dyke to divide Mercia from Welsh lands.


Dufy
French painter and designer. In 1900 he studied at the É cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and experimented with Impressionism. He converted to Fauvism in 1905 under the influence of H. Matisse. He developed a distinctive style characterized by rapid calligraphic drawing on backgrounds of bright, decorative color; his subjects included such recreational scenes as horse races, parades, and concerts. He also designed textiles and made numerous book illustrations. His highly accessible works did much to popularize modern art.


Fides
Roman goddess of good faith and honesty, who oversaw the integrity of the Romans. She was closely associated with Jupiter, and her temple was built near his on the Capitoline Hill in 254 BC. In the later Roman period she was called Fides Publica ("Public Faith") and was considered the guardian of treaties and other state documents, which were placed in her temple for safekeeping.
