Iberians
Prehistoric people of S and E Spain. They were largely untouched by the migrations of Celtic peoples to N and central Spain from the 8th cent. BC on. Culturally they were influenced by Greek and Phoenician trading colonies. On the E coast, tribes seem to have formed independent city-states; in the south, they formed monarchies. Their economy was based on agriculture, mining, and metallurgy. Their non-Indo-European language continued into Roman times.
Beria
Soviet politician and director of the Soviet secret police. He worked in intelligence and counterintelligence activities from 1921. As Communist Party head of the Transcaucasian republics (1932-38), he personally oversaw the political purges initiated by J. Stalin (see Purge Trials). He was head of the Soviet secret police 1938-53, and after Stalin's death he became one of four deputy prime ministers and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After attempting to succeed Stalin as sole dictator, he was arrested and executed.
Aberhart
Canadian politician, first Social Credit Party premier (Alberta, 1935-43). Born in Kippen, Ontario, he was a high-school principal in Calgary (1915-35). An active lay preacher, he founded the Calgary Prophetic Bible Institute (1918). In 1932 he used his evangelical rhetoric to promote monetary-reform theories to solve Alberta's economic problems of the Great Depression, proposing to issue dividends (social credit) to each person, based on the real wealth of the province. When his party won a majority in the 1935 provincial election, he became premier and minister of education, but his social-credit proposals were disallowed by the federal government.
Beira
Coastal city (pop., 1991 est.: 299,000), SE Mozambique. Located near the mouth of the Zambezi River, it is the chief port for central Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Founded in 1891 as a trading company's headquarters, it passed to Portuguese administration in 1942 and then to independent Mozambique in 1975. It is the terminus of railways from S. Africa, Zimbabwe, Congo, Zambia, and Malawi.
Berra
U.S. baseball player, manager, and coach. Born in St. Louis, he joined the New York Yankees in 1946 and served as the team's regular catcher from 1949 until his retirement in 1963. He was named the Amer. League's Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1954, and 1955. He caught in more World Series games (75) than any other catcher, and hit 20 or more home runs a season through 1958. He managed the Yankees in 1964, but was fired and became a coach and manager (1965-75) with the New York Mets. He returned to the Yankees as a coach (1976-82) and later manager (1983-85). He was known for idiosyncratic remarks such as "It ain't over till it's over," and the cartoon character Yogi Bear was named for him.
