attic
Floor of a dwelling contained within the eaves of the roof structure. The word originally denoted any portion of a wall above the main cornice (see entablature). Used by the ancient Romans principally for decorative purposes and inscriptions, as in triumphal arches, it became an important part of the Renaissance facade, often enclosing an additional story.
Istria
Peninsula, extending into the NE Adriatic Sea. It has an area of 1,220 sq mi (3,160 sq km). Its N portion is part of Slovenia, while the central and S parts belong to Croatia. A tiny strip of coast in the northwest is the site of Trieste and belongs to Italy. Istria's ancient Illyrian inhabitants were overthrown by Romans in 177 BC, and Slavic peoples settled there from the 7th cent. AD. It passed through the hands of various Mediterranean powers until Austria gained control in 1797 and developed Trieste as a port. Istria was seized by Italy in 1919; Yugoslavia occupied most of the peninsula in 1947. Yugoslavian Istria became part of Croatia and Slovenia at those states' independence in 1991.
matrix
Set of numbers arranged in rows and columns to form a rectangular array. Matrix elements may also be differential operators, vectors, or functions. Matrices have wide applications in engineering, physics, economics, and statistics, as well as in various branches of mathematics. They are usually first encountered in the study of systems of equations represented by matrix equations of the form , which may be solved by finding the inverse of matrix or by using an algebraic method based on its determinant.
ostrich
Two-toed, long-necked, ratite (Struthio camelus, family Struthionidae) found in Africa, the largest living bird. An adult male ostrich may be 8 ft (2.5 m) tall and weigh up to 350 lbs (155 kg). Males are black, with white wing and tail plumes; females are brown. Ostriches live in flocks of 5-50, usually among grazing animals, eating plants and an occasional animal. Roaring, hissing males fight for three to five hens, which lay 15-60 eggs in a communal nest scraped in the ground. The male sits at night; the females take turns by day. One-month-old chicks can run with adults, at 40 mph (65 kph). To escape detection, ostriches may lie on the ground with neck outstretched, a habit that may have given rise to the notion that they bury their head in the sand.
