rap
Musical style in which rhymed verse is chanted ("rapped") to a musical accompaniment, whose primary element is usually beats. Rap, which first appeared in black and Latino neighborhoods in New York City, came to national prominence with the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" (1979), which featured light verse rhymed over the bass and beats of Chic's disco hit "Good Times." In the early 1980s the breakdance fad fueled rap's growth; stars of the decade included Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy. More recent stars have included Master P and Sean "Puffy" Combs. Having gained a huge white audience, rap has continued to thrive and evolve.

The seeds yield an oil (rapeseed oil, or canola) that is the lowest in saturated fat of any edible oil, making it popular for use in cooking. It is also used as an ingredient in soap and margarine and as a lamp fuel.
