Abbe
U.S. meteorologist. Born in New York City, he was trained as an astronomer and appointed director of the Cincinnati Observatory in 1868. His interest turned to meteorology, and he inaugurated a public weather service that served as a model for the national weather service, which was organized shortly thereafter as a branch of the (U.S. Army) Signal Service. In 1871 he was appointed chief meteorologist of the branch, which in 1891 was reorganized under civilian control as the U.S. Weather Bureau (later the National Weather Service), and he served in that capacity more than 45 years.
amber
Fossil tree resin that occurs as irregular nodules, rods, or droplike shapes in all shades of yellow with nuances of orange, brown, and, rarely, red. Milky-white opaque varieties are called bone amber. Hundreds of species of insects and plants are found as fossils in amber. Deeply colored translucent to transparent amber is prized as gem material, and numerous ornamental carved objects and beads are made from amber. Amber has been found throughout the world, but the largest deposits occur along the shores of the Baltic Sea.
Bambara
People of the upper Niger region of Mali who speak a Mande language of the Niger-Congo family. Numbering 3.1 million, the Bambara have their own writing system and are noted for their sculpture in wood and metal. In the 17th-18th cent. the Bambara developed two separate empires, one based in S\u00e9 gou (and incl. Timbuktu) and the other in Kaarta.

Any of the tall, treelike grasses found in tropical and subtropical to mild temperate regions that make up the subfamily Bambusoideae, family Poaceae (or Gramineae). Bamboos are giant, fast-growing grasses with woody stems. A few species of the genus Arundinaria are native to the S U.S., where they form dense canebrakes along riverbanks and in marshy areas. The woody, hollow aerial stems grow in branching clusters from a thick rhizome, often forming a dense undergrowth that excludes other plants. All parts of the bamboo are used, for purposes incl. food, livestock fodder, fine-quality paper, construction materials, and medicines, and as ornamentals in landscape gardens.
barbet
Any of about 75 species of tropical birds (family Capitonidae) named for the bristles at the base of their stout, sharp bill. They are big-headed and short-tailed, 3.5-12 in. (9-30 cm) long, and greenish or brownish, with splashes of bright colors or white. Barbets are found throughout Central America to N S. America, in sub-Saharan Africa, and in SE Asia. They all fly weakly, and they sit in treetops when not feeding on insects, lizards, birds' eggs, fruit, and berries. They call loudly, jerking the head or tail. Maddeningly vocal or repetitious species are sometimes called brain-fever birds.
