Gaea
Greek goddess of the earth. She was both mother and wife to Uranus, or Heaven, from whom she was separated by her son Cronus, a Titan. According to Hesiod, she was the mother of all 12 Titans, as well as of the Furies and the Cyclopes (see Cyclops). She may have originated as a mother goddess worshiped in pre-Hellenic Greece before the introduction of the cult of Zeus.


Aidan
Apostle of Northumbria and founder of Lindisfarne. He was a monk at Iona in Scotland when King Oswald of Northumbria requested that he be made bishop of the newly converted Northumbrians. He established his church, see, and monastery on the island of Lindisfarne, not far from the royal stronghold of Bamburgh. From there he evangelized N England, founding churches, monasteries, and a school. Bede praised him for his learning, charity, and simplicity of life.


Aizawl
City (pop., 1991: 154,000), capital of Mizoram state, India. The surrounding region is part of the Assam-Myanmar geologic province, with steeply inclined hill ranges. Many in the population are from Myanmar. In the 1970s Aizawl was the scene of an armed attack on the government treasury by members of the Mizo National Front. Poultry raising supplements an agricultural economy.


Alea
Cuban film director. After earning a law degree in Cuba, he studied filmmaking in Rome (1951-53). A supporter of F. Castro, he helped develop Cuba's film industry after 1959 and made the Communist regime's first official feature film, Stories of the Revolution (1960). Later he worked within the restrictions of the regime to satirize and explore various aspects of life in postrevolutionary Cuba in such internationally acclaimed films as Death of a Bureaucrat (1966), Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), The Survivors (1978), and Strawberry and Chocolate (1993). He is regarded as the finest director Cuba has produced.


Ava
Ruined city, Myanmar. The city, located on the Irrawaddy River southwest of Mandalay, was founded in the 14th cent. by the Shans, who made it their capital. It was destroyed in 1527, but again became the capital in 1634 under the Toungoo dynasty. When Alaungpaya founded the Konbaung dynasty in the 18th cent., Ava served as its capital for a time, and even after the dynasty built Amarapura and Mandalay, its seat was often referred to as the "Court of Ava."


Baeck
Prussian-Polish rabbi, spiritual leader of German Jewry during the Nazi period. After earning his PhD in philosophy at the Univ. of Berlin, he served as a rabbi in Silesia, D\u00fc sseldorf, and Berlin, becoming the leading liberal Jewish religious thinker of his time. He synthesized Neo-Kantianism and rabbinic ethics in The Essence of Judaism (1905) and considered the Christian gospels as rabbinic literature in The Gospel as a Document of Jewish Religious History (1938).
