Bogarde
British actor. The son of a Dutch-born art critic, he made his stage debut in 1939 and won a film contract from the Rank studios after World War II. After appearing for a decade mainly in light comedies such as Doctor in the House (1953), he began demonstrating his acting range in such serious films as The Doctor's Dilemma (1958), Victim (1961), The Servant (1963), Darling (1965), Accident (1967), The Damned (1969), and Death in Venice (1971).

-->Edward I

King of England (1272-1307). The eldest son of Henry III, he supported his father in a civil war with the barons, contributing to Henry's defeat at the battle of Lewes (1264) but later winning out over the rebels. Edward joined the abortive Eighth Crusade in 1271-72, then returned to England to succeed his father. His reign was a time of rising national consciousness, in which he strengthened the crown against the feudal nobility. He fostered the development of Parliament and played an important role in defining English common law. He conquered Wales (1277) and crushed Welsh uprisings against English rule, but his conquest of Scotland (1296), incl. the defeat of W. Wallace, was undone by later revolts. He expelled the Jews from England in 1290; they would not be readmitted until 1655. He died on a campaign against Robert I, who had proclaimed himself king of Scotland the previous year.

Godard
French film director. He wrote film criticism for the influential journal Cahiers du ciné ma before astonishing audiences with his first feature film, the improvisatory and original Breathless (1960), which established him as the apostle of the New Wave. He returned to themes of more universal concern with Every Man for Himself (1979) and Passion (1982), but shocked audiences and the Vatican with his updated Nativity story in Hail Mary! (1985).

Wellington, it is Tasmania's largest and Australia's most southerly city. Established in 1803, it became a major port for ships whaling in the S oceans.
