Haldeman
U.S. White House aide. Born in Los Angeles, he worked as an advertising executive there 1949-68. He managed several of R. Nixon's political campaigns, incl. his 1968 presidential campaign. Named White House chief of staff, he became Nixon's close adviser along with J. Ehrlichman. He participated in the White House cover-up surrounding the Watergate break-in (see Watergate scandal) as well as other "dirty tricks" used in the 1972 campaign. Forced to resign in 1973, he was tried and convicted for conspiracy, perjury, and obstruction of justice in 1975; he served 18 months in jail.
