Possible definitions for hiyama
Hinayana
Name given to the more conservative schools of Buddhism. A Sanskrit word meaning "Lesser Vehicle" (because it is concerned with the individual's salvation), it was first applied pejoratively to the established Buddhist schools by followers of the more liberal Mahayana ("Greater Vehicle," because it is concerned with universal salvation) tradition. The ancient Hinayana schools continued to prosper after the rise of the Mahayana in the 1st cent. AD, but Theravada Buddhism was the only Hinayana school that maintained a strong position after the collapse of Indian Buddhism in the 13th cent.
Huysmans
French Decadent writer. His early works, influenced by contemporary naturalism, were followed by far more individual and violent works. The first was À vau-l'eau (1882; Down Stream). His best-known novel, À rebours (1884; Against the Grain), relates experiments in decadence by the bored survivor of a noble line. The controversial and clearly autobiographical Là -bas (1891; Down There) is a tale of 19th-cent. satanists. His final novels concern his return to Roman Catholicism. He also wrote perceptive art criticism.
Yama
In Indian mythology, the lord of death. The Vedas describe him as the first man who died. The son of the sun god Surya, he presides over the resting place of the dead. In the Vedas, he was a cheerful king of the departed ancestors, but in later mythology he became known as the just judge who punished the deceased for their sins.
