Albert
Prince consort of Queen Victoria of Britain and father of Edward VII. Albert married Victoria, his first cousin, in 1840 and became in effect her private secretary and chief confidential adviser. Their domestic happiness helped assure the continuation of the monarchy, which had been somewhat uncertain. Though the German-born Albert was undeservedly unpopular, the British public belatedly recognized his worth after his death at 42 from typhoid fever. In the ensuing years, the grief-stricken queen made policy decisions based on what she thought Albert would have done.


Alberta
Province (pop., 1996: 2,847,000), Canada, westernmost of three Prairie Provinces. Alberta is bounded by Saskatchewan, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the U.S. Its capital is Edmonton. Long inhabited by various Indian peoples, the area was explored by Europeans in the 1750s. It eventually came under the rule of the Hudson's Bay Co., which transferred it to the Dominion of Canada in 1870. It was made part of the Northwest Territories in 1882. Its population grew with the coming of the railroads, and the expansion of wheat farming. Alberta was made a province in 1905. Once dependent on agriculture, it underwent economic growth with the discovery of oil in 1947, and the ensuing discovery of other major oil and gas deposits.


halberd
Weapon consisting of an ax blade and a sharp spike mounted on the end of a long staff. Usually about 5-6 ft (1.5-2 m) long, it was an important weapon in middle Europe in the 15th and early 16th cent. It enabled a foot soldier to contend with an armored man on horseback; the spiked head kept the rider at a distance, and the ax blade could strike a heavy cleaving blow. Firearms and the declining use of armor made the halberd obsolete.
