Haber
German physical chemist. After early research in electrochemistry and thermodynamics, he developed, with his brother-in-law Carl Bosch (1874-1940), the Haber-Bosch process for making ammonia. Intensely patriotic, he directed Germany's World War I chemical-warfare efforts, under which poison gas was introduced. His versatility and his wide-ranging and important work brought him fame and honor, and he was awarded a 1918 Nobel Prize. In 1933 the Nazi Party's anti-Semitic policies led him to resign as head (since 1911) of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute.


Habermas
German philosopher associated with the Frankfurt school. He has taught primarily at the Univ. of Frankfurt, and also formerly directed the Max Planck Institute in Starnberg (1971-80). In Theory of Communicative Action (1981), he argues that while instrumental reason (which starts from the assumption of a subject confronting an independent object that the subject seeks to understand in order to control) has dominated modern social thought, only communicative reason (which postulates a community of subjects engaged in communication for the purpose of universal emancipation) holds out the possibility of forging a truly democratic society.


Aberdeen
City (pop., 1995 est.: 219,000) and commercial port on the North Sea, E Scotland. Situated at the mouths of the Dee and Don rivers, it is the chief port of N Scotland. It was a royal burgh from the 12th cent. and a Scottish royal residence in the 12th-14th cent. It supported Robert the Bruce in wars for Scottish independence, and for a time was the headquarters of Edward I. From the 1970s Aberdeen developed rapidly as the principal British center of the North Sea oil industry and its associated service and supply industries. It is the headquarters for the administrative region of Grampian.


cabaret
Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions. The first German Kabarett was opened in Berlin c.1900 by Baron Ernst von Wolzogen and accompanied its musical acts with biting political satire. It became the center for underground political and literary expression and a showcase for the works of such social critics as B. Brecht and K. Weill, a decadent but fertile artistic milieu later portrayed in the musical Cabaret (1966). The English cabaret derived from concerts given in city taverns in the 18th-19th cent. and evolved into the music hall. In the U.S., the cabaret developed into the nightclub, where comedians, singers, or musicians performed. Small jazz and folk clubs and, later, comedy clubs evolved from the original cabaret.
