Caruso
Italian tenor. Born in Naples and apprenticed to a mechanical engineer at 10, at 18 he began to sing in public in his free time. He attracted the notice of a teacher, and made his professional debut in 1894. He sang his best-known role, Canio in R. Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, for the first time in 1896. He recovered from a disastrous La Scala debut in 1900 and within two years had gained the high notes that made him an international star and a legend. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera 1903-20 in almost 60 roles, becoming the most famous male opera star of his time. His warm, appealing tenor voice of great emotive power made his recordings (which include some of the first vocal recordings ever made) best-sellers for decades after his death at 48.

Garuda
In Hindu mythology, the bird (similar to a kite or eagle) on whom the god Vishnu rides. Garuda was a younger brother of Aruna, charioteer of the sun god Surya. His mother was enslaved by nagas (hence the emnity between kites and serpents) and was released only after Garuda brought the serpents an elixir of immortality. He is associated with royalty in several S.E. Asian countries.

Biological classification that ranks below family and above species, consisting of structurally or phylogenetically (see phylogenetic tree) related species or a single species exhibiting unusual differences. For example, the species of roses collectively form the genus Rosa, and those of horses, donkeys, and zebras form the genus Equus. The genus name, capitalized and usually italicized, is the first word of a scientific name in the system of binomial nomenclature.

Gris
Spanish painter active in Paris. He studied engineering at the Madrid School of Arts and Manufactures (1902-4). In 1906 he moved to Paris and began producing drawings in the Art Nouveau style for newspapers. He became involved with the Cubist artists, notably P. Picasso, and soon developed his own version of Synthetic Cubism, a style more severe and calculated than that of other Cubists. His technique included the use of paper collage. He also produced sculpture, book illustrations, and sets and costumes for S. Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

Gros
French painter. He was trained by his father, a painter of miniatures, and later by J.-L. David in Paris. In the 1790s he accompanied Napoleon I on his campaigns as his official battle painter. The dramatic power of such paintings as Napoleon Visiting the Pesthouse at Jaffa (1804) influenced T. Gé ricault and E. Delacroix. When David went into exile after Napoleon's defeat, Gros took over his studio and tried to work in the Neoclassical style. His best works after 1815 were portraits. Haunted by a sense of failure, he drowned himself in the Seine. He was a leading figure in the development of Romanticism.
